Our Story

Back in 2018, Sam made the initial sketches for a management game where the player protects their base from waves of approaching enemies. But Sam’s coding abilities were limited. So, he learned as he went along. While this inevitably resulted in somewhat messy code, it allowed time for the game’s concept to mature and mechanics to be improved upon. Because Sam was only able to work on the game during time off from university, progress was gradual. After about 18 months and a round of beta testing, the idea had developed into a version of Final Outpost that was ready to release onto the App Store.

Exceeding all expectations, Final Outpost reached 100,000 downloads in less than two months. Initial traction came from a small marketing campaign, which then grew from discovery on the App Store. Feedback was hugely positive; the average rating from over 2,000 reviews is 4.4/5 and the Final Outpost Discord server was filling up with new members. Sam released a number of patches during this time and then began work on a huge update with Ewan later in the year. Final Outpost 1.1 introduced a host of new features, reworked mechanics, and UI improvements.

Following the continued success of the game and a wave of requests for Final Outpost on Android, Sam founded Exabyte Games with Ben and Ewan. The first goal would be to develop an entirely re-engineered version of Final Outpost for both iOS and Android platforms. After the addition of Ben H (known to many as Big Ben) to Ben’s development team, the duo writes the code to support Android devices and will lay the foundations for future games. Meanwhile, Sam and Ewan are working on a brand-new website and promotional graphics.

The Final Outpost community has made it clear that there is exceptional potential for adding new content and features to the game. We plan on releasing regular updates for Final Outpost after its big release on the Google Play Store. Following this, we hope to create more games for people to play and expand the team here at Exabyte Games.

Sam Clothier

Founder & CEO

Slightly obsessed with the bridging of biological and artificial intelligence, Sam has been studying neuroscience at University College London since 2018. He has interned at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research and is now associated with the Neural Computation Lab at UCL.

Whilst learning how to code in Python and Swift, Sam worked during holidays on a game that would become Final Outpost. He continued to work on new updates in 2020 with Ewan following the success of the game on the App Store. He founded Exabyte Games in December 2020 and the Ben-Ben duo took the reins of development. Sam is now involved with the strategic, marketing, technical and creative direction of the company.

Sam is a fan of the McLaren F1 team, The Walking Dead, Nothing But Thieves, and loves a good management game.

Ben Clothier

CTO

Ben has grown up playing a lot of computer games which has led to a great interest in programming and game design. Because of this, he has been studying Computer Science at University of Southampton since 2020.

Over the summer of 2020, Ben learnt how to use the Unity game engine with help from online courses and YouTube tutorials. Both Ben and Sam realised that they could work together to make more games with Ben’s technical skills and Sam’s leadership. This naturally led to forming a start-up together where Ben is taking the technical lead with help from the other Ben.

Ben plays a huge variety of PC games (a lot of which are management games), listens to a lot of modern rock, plays the piano, and appreciates a good game of poker.

Ewan Hart

CMO

Ewan’s previous full-time role as an apprentice Digital Marketer gave him the skills to design, manage and maintain websites and social media accounts. Self-taught in Sony Vegas and Photoshop, Ewan is well-versed in video postproduction and design.

Ewan began studying BA Graphic Design at Nottingham Trent University in September 2020. He was heavily involved with graphics production and marketing strategy for the Final Outpost 1.1 update in Summer 2020. Ewan and Sam have been friends since they met in 2016, so it felt natural to join the Exabyte Games team.

Ewan’s loves Formula 1 (and has designed many liveries and mods for the games), is a supporter of Forest Green Rovers FC, watches the NBA, listens to The Weeknd, and can’t stop talking about politics. He is a fan of racing and sports video games (not FIFA).

Ben Hipwell

Developer

Like many other fellow students in his generation, the Big Bang of Ben’s path into computing was the introduction of Minecraft on his family laptop. Continuing his interest further at secondary school via GCSEs and A levels, he is now studying Computer Science at the University of Southampton.

Packing up and leaving for University in October 2020, he met his flatmate Ben Clothier, who just happened to have the same name, be on the same course and live just across the hall. In early 2021, he was approached by Ben C to help with the next stages of development for Final Outpost.

Ben enjoys watching sports, Chelsea FC, Fantasy Premier League, going to the gym, video games, cars, tech, following the finance world and is also a fan of the McLaren F1 team.
