Our Story

Back in 2018, Sam made the initial sketches for a management game where the player protects their base from waves of approaching enemies. But Sam’s coding abilities were limited. So, he learned as he went along. While this inevitably resulted in somewhat messy code, it allowed time for the game’s concept and mechanics to mature. Because Sam was only able to work on the game during time off from university, progress was gradual. After about 18 months and a round of beta testing, Final Outpost was ready to release onto the App Store.

Exceeding all expectations, Final Outpost reached 100,000 downloads within two months. Initial traction came from a small marketing campaign, which then grew from discovery on the App Store. Feedback was hugely positive; the Final Outpost Discord server was filling up with new members as the average rating from over 2,000 reviews reached 4.4/5. Sam released a number of patches during this time and began work on a significant content update with Ewan later in the year. Final Outpost 1.1 introduced a host of new features, reworked mechanics, and UI improvements.

Following the continued success of the game and a wave of requests for Final Outpost on Android, Sam founded Exabyte Games with Ben and Ewan. The first goal would be to develop an entirely re-engineered version of Final Outpost for both iOS and Android platforms. This was achieved in August 2021 by a development team consisting of Ben, Ross and Big Ben. Meanwhile, Sam and Ewan worked on a brand-new website and promotional graphics.

The Final Outpost community has made it clear that there is exceptional potential for adding new content and features to the game. We plan on releasing regular updates for Final Outpost whilst creating new experiences for our players.

Sam Clothier

Founder & CEO

Slightly obsessed with the bridging of biological and artificial intelligence, Sam has been studying neuroscience at University College London since 2018. He has interned at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research and is now a student in the Neural Computation Lab at UCL.

Whilst learning how to code in Python and Swift, Sam worked during holidays on a game that would become Final Outpost. Following the success of the game on the App Store, he produced new updates with Ewan and founded Exabyte Games in December 2020. Sam is now involved with the strategic, technical and creative direction of the company.

Sam is a fan of the McLaren F1 team, The Walking Dead, Nothing But Thieves, and loves a good management game.

Ben Clothier

CTO

Ben grew up playing a lot of computer games which gradually instilled in him a passion for programming and game design. Since 2020, he has studied Computer Science at the University of Southampton.

Over the last two years, Ben familiarised himself with the Unity game engine with help from online courses and tutorials. As he became proficient, it became clear that his technical skills neatly complemented those of Sam. This naturally led to the founding of Exabyte Games.

Ben plays an array of strategy, simulation and action games on PC. An avid piano player, he frequently listens to modern rock and appreciates a good game of poker.

Ewan Hart

CMO

Having previously worked as an apprentice Digital Marketer, Ewan designs and maintains websites and manages social media accounts. Self-taught in Sony Vegas and Photoshop, Ewan is well-versed in video post production and design.

Ewan began studying Graphic Design at Nottingham Trent University in 2020. He was heavily involved with graphics production and marketing for the Final Outpost 1.1 update. Ewan and Sam have been friends since they met in 2016, so it felt natural to join the Final Outpost team.

Ewan loves Formula 1 and has designed many liveries and mods for the games. He supports Forest Green Rovers FC, watches the NBA, listens to The Weeknd, and can’t stop talking about politics. He is a fan of racing and sports video games, except FIFA.

Ross Popovs

Developer

Having worked with the Unity engine for over 6 years, Ross has always been interested in game development and combining technology with art. He is currently studying Computer Science at the University of Southampton.

Ross has joined the development team as a Unity programmer. Inspired by games such as Portal, Superliminal, and Firewatch, he hopes to create experiences which innovate and challenge player expectations.

Ross is always up to start a Minecraft server and join friends for Overwatch. Outside of gaming, he enjoys Eurovision and Avatar.

JJ Snedden

QA Tester

JJ grew up playing and watching video games on the family PS2, initiating their passion for technology. Like Ben and Ross, they are currently in their 3rd year at university studying Computer Science.

JJ has joined the team as a QA tester, helping our development team find and eliminate bugs for future game updates.

While their main interests lie with computing and engineering, they love playing games, hanging out with friends and water sports and skiing. They are also hoping to try scuba diving this year!
